Before he started his cycling podcast Dan had been working a corporate job, where he was involved in process improvement and project management in the Financial Services Sector. Bikes have always played a huge part in my life and have provided freedom, adventures, where I go to think, to test myself and I've met so many amazing people through cycling. I can't imagine my life without bikes these days, so I recently decided to make a change and follow my passion. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQ: Tell us about your favourite bike ride?  \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eA:  My favourite ride was when I finally convinced my non-cycling wife, Amy (she’s a runner) to come on a tour of Europe with me. She wasn't won over by the idea of 8 hours a day in the saddle and sleeping in a tent. Who would of thought it? 🤣\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWe had the best time though, spending 7 weeks cycling across France, Switzerland, Germany and Holland. It sticks in my mind as it's the first tour we did together (that didn't end in an accident - another story) and we learnt so much about touring and about each other. It paved the way for many adventures and we've got to see so many amazing places throughout the years, both by bike and hiking. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQ: What’s your favourite bike snack? \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eA:  ooo good question. I try to eat pretty 'clean' when on the bike, except Haribo (I love those). I'd say my favourite is those flavoured date bars. I think they're called Nakd bars. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eYou can't go wrong with a halfway stop for a cake though.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQ: Cycling hero? \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eA: Wow, that's a question! There are so many cyclists that inspire me, which is why I started the podcast. I wanted to share the stories and inspire others. I get to talk to some really cool people. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eTheres so many ultra and adventure riders that inspire me daily. If I had to pick one it'd be \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ubartholmoes\/?hl=en\"\u003eUlrich Bartholmoes\u003c\/a\u003e. He's an ultra cyclist in Germany who has smashed some of the biggest ultra races in the past few years. He works full time, gets up mega early, does like 100km before working and has such a great approach to the races, where he experiments with what his body can do. He's also a really nice guy. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQ: What are you most looking forward to about the new job? \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eA: Learning and getting to know the team. I'm really looking forward to learning how the team create the bikes. I'm fascinated by bikes and I've seen the builds and paint jobs, I'm always amazed by the beauty of the bikes \u0026amp; craftsmanship, so getting to learn how they're created in a way that fits a person exactly is an amazing opportunity. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQ: As a relative newcomer to the market, what do you think is the biggest challenge we as bike companies have to tackle? \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eA: As you mention, I am new to the market so have lots to learn. I have heard bike sales have increased throughout the past year so I imagine a challenge right now is making sure we’re keeping ahead, so we can meet customer expectations. It seems lots of people want bikes right now so that's a good challenge to have!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eQ: You’ve got the pick of the bikes in the workshop now… first ride, is it steel or carbon?\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eA: It'd be steel for me. I have a carbon road bike, a titanium gravel bike and 2 steel bikes (maybe too many?)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eI'm not sure why but there's something great about traditional but innovative steel frames. I hear people say steel 'feels' better to ride and although I can't put my finger on it I do agree. I found myself in Montgenevre high in the Southern Alps amongst the best riding in the world, near to where we now build our frames (in Northern Italy). I set up shop and started to develop and produce our first road and gravel bike concepts from there. In 2016 we then launched our first bike, our Izoard RR, a relevant, lightweight steel race bike. We’ve grown from there.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt all started way before that, though, when I started learning to design and build frames. I’ve never called myself a frame builder though, instead I oversee a process of designing and creating some of the best steel bikes in the world. That starts with world class bikes, which we’re going to continue to develop and push. That’s the bit which gets harder as you get bigger and it’s the bit the big brands really struggle with. I want people to feel super special from the first time they come see us about a new bike, till they want to come back and buy another one.   \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAt times I’ve felt how hard that it can be to maintain that high level of service while I’ve been managing on my own. Together we can focus in on those aspects to make sure the whole experience is as good as it can be for steel and carbon customers too. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003eQ: And what are the challenges? \u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003eA: \u003c\/b\u003eDesigning in steel and standing out has always been a challenge. We love nailing it, of course, but it’s ultimately three triangles built in round tubes. For me it’s those limitations that make it exciting. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCarbon has developed similar 'limitations' too. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYears of aero testing and maturing expectations of ride and compliance vs responsiveness have almost reached consensus on the bones of carbon bike design, but that doesn’t mean totally homogenised design and doesn't mean the constraints that come with that can’t be bettered, and it certainly doesn’t mean it’s not fun and rewarding to push it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOne of our big challenges is also our biggest strength in that we’re small and lean.  We’re well placed to push against those constraints technically and creatively and make engaging bikes to compete alongside anything at the top level. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd of course, the one place we can really stand out on our own is in the experience of co-creating, designing and specifying dream bikes for people who love riding as much as we do. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere’s always going to be someone who’d prefer to go to the local bike shop and buy something off the peg, of course. There’s nothing wrong with that.
