We went through the design process, he led me through it and explained all the different elements we could change for my style of riding. I was clueless at the start. He wanted the frame to have that tweak that makes you look twice, the essence of what WyndyMilla is. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe initial design was produced as a creative concept on a Saw Dr frameset. David, WyndyMilla’s bike fitter and frame designer saw that concept and initially triggered a talking point with the WMPaintworks team.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI wanted to design something that gave a nod to classic British racing heritage with a spike of Prodigy\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/WMP_PINK_GREEN_2019.jpg?v=1547646117\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the concept was established, Sam, WyndyMilla’s chief painter had some ideas. From that, the plan to paint the cranks was put forward and all agreed that it was the “X factor” that a show bike really needs. Adding shaped colour accents around the head tube was Sam’s idea too. They are shaped to show that WyndyMilla produce majesty with menace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOnce Sam had applied the finishing coat over the regal racing green frame, it was handed back to David to build and finish. Once David saw the finished frame he knew what he wanted to bring the whole build to life. For anyone else though it can be a struggle, blindly ordering in the biggest or smallest sized product and hoping it's going to work for you.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eTwo of our favourite custom projects this season illustrate this perfectly, both are Massive Attack Disc bikes but with very different design specifications reflecting the contrast in their owners needs. Most stock size ranges stop not far below the average size woman, meaning a lot of women or small riders can be overly stretched out and compromised on a bike which is designed around a rider taller and heavier than they are. Karen's primary focus is on long distance endurance riding and as an \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOsteopath she \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eunderstands the consequence of poor ergonomics better than most.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC04296.jpg?v=1546526427\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eStuart, like a lot of riders, has come to cycling after years of other sports and at 6.5ft tall with the build of a heavyweight rower he has to duck under the beams of our Surrey Hq. For big powerful riders like Stuart the key is to give them the stability and support to let them convert their strength and power into forwards motion without their equipment flexing under the strain. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eTheir stark difference in size and build mean that Karen and Stuart experience the performance characteristics of a bike in totally different ways - here's how we've manage to cater to their seemingly opposite requirements all within one platform. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOne thing is pretty clear from a first glance; Stuart's bike is a lot bigger than Karen's. One is smaller than an xs, the other significantly bigger than an xl. Small riders often suffer with compromised bikes being too long and too stretched out, with geometry that doesn't suit short stems producing nervous handling. At the other end of the spectrum Stuart's previous bike had the seatpost set to it’s limit and the saddle was still too low, Once we set our fit jig to the correct saddle height his previous handlebar position was a long way away and looked incredibly aggressive. By the end of the session we’d achieved a balanced position with a sensible bar drop but which would not be achievable with a stock geometry. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIn contrast Karen’s fit coordinates are some of the smallest to come out of our studio in the last few years and makes use of some of the most ‘small bike appropriate’ components we have available for the women's market including a 36cm compact handlebar and 165mm Crank arms.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC03847-2.jpg?v=1546527061\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIt’s almost unheard of for a small rider to complain about any modern carbon bike flexing under their power or feeling soft and inefficient. Because small sizes of bike use shorter tubes and tighter triangles they are inherently stiffer than the larger sizes. This can result in a bike being overly rigid and riders will often complain of it feeling jittery, skittish and not very confidence inspiring or predictable at speed. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eKaren's frame is tuned to a light rider weight and uses our lowest stiffness tune to keep the flex dynamics proportionate to the rider. Compared with Stuart’s frame all the main tubes are smaller in diameter and the junctions are not reinforced to the same degree. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWhen building frames for big riders, sufficient stiffness and stability are absolutely key to performance on the road with excessive torsional frame flex causing the bikes handling to feel vague and unpredictable. That same lack of stiffness also causes the bike to flex under power robbing the feeling of responsiveness and speed. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eFor years we tested frames under Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt, at 6ft4 and over 90kgs race weight there's no better way to test something is strong enough and stiff enough than to get Maggy to pedal the cranks off it. He was instrumental in developing our highest stiffness spec on the original Massive Attack and is all too aware of the challenge of bigger frames, his race frames were our first to feature extra laminations at the headtube and BB to ensure an absolute bare minimum deflection when cornering and sprinting. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/maggy.jpg?v=1546527868\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOn Stuart’s frame the tubes are made larger in diameter, stiffer and stronger with extra laminations at the junctions compared with Karen’s. The seatpost is a larger size as well to reduce the deflection a little and provide a stable pedalling platform. Notably Stuart’s bike does not use our most rigid option - the integrated one piece seatpost that Magnus’ race bike spec has. This is for 2 major reasons, firstly Stuart wanted a comfortable compliant ride for long days on the bike, so a little deflection at the saddle is desirable and secondly he travels regularly with the bike and needs to be able to get it into a box, not easy with a saddle height of almost 88cm and an ISP. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC04306_5b7aeda8-321a-41be-a045-a998be1fe8f9.jpg?v=1546526416\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eFor our biggest bikes like Stuart’s we use an Enve Road 2.0 Fork, this is in part due to the excellent strength and stiffness characteristics but also because they offer a steerer tube 5cm longer than the industry standard allowing us to build longer head tubes for bigger bikes without having to compromise on the aesthetics or adjustability. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOn our smallest frames we often use longer rake fork options and smaller fork tapers to give a better balance of stiffness and comfort as well as to improve handling response with smaller stem lengths. Karen’s uses our standard Disc Road fork with a tapered steerer. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC03833-2.jpg?v=1546527154\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBoth riders are using electronic groupsets with Hydraulic disc brakes but for quite different reasons. For Stuart’s bike the disc brakes are an essential upgrade as they reliably produce the necessary power to bring the bike under control at high speeds with a higher rider weight. Moving the brake temperature away from the wheel rims means that larger riders can safely use fast, comfortable and lightweight carbon wheels year round regardless of the terrain. The Sram eTap System makes for a super clean build and consistently responsive shifts.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC04302_2018598a-239c-42b4-b89b-cec3145e687e.jpg?v=1546526423\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAt the opposite end of the sizing spectrum the hydraulic brake system is a huge benefit for smaller riders who often have less grip strength with which to apply the brakes. In this application the Disc Brake is a massive improvement in terms of confidence and safety. Karen’s Shimano di2 levers are set up with a short reach for less stretch to the controls to reduce hand fatigue and give confident control. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC03815-2.jpg?v=1546527087\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eStuart’s bike is rolling on a set of Custom handbuilt wheels from Noble which use a high spoke count and stiff 38mm Deep rims, compared to a factory wheelset they are a lot better suited to the higher stresses of a big riders. The rims have a broad 20mm internal profile which stretches the 28mm tyres size up to well over 30mm to improve the cushioning and resistance to pinch flats. The Massive Attack Disc Platform clears this wheel \/ tyre spec comfortably.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/DSC04308.jpg?v=1546526406\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eKaren’s bike uses a more conventional 25mm tyre on the Mavic UST Tubeless system, this system is great for smaller riders as it performance is at it’s best at the lower pressures which are suited to lower body weights. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eNo custom bike is complete without it’s paint, the small frame size and tubing diameter of Karen's bike meant that our Design team at WM Paintworks had a small canvas to work on that couldn’t afford to look busy or cluttered. I was concerned the Massive Attack would be too ‘racer’ oriented and was initially looking for something to emulate the comfort of a titanium frame. David explained to me that he could create a Massive Attack with a more comfortable geometry, emulating some of the characteristics of titanium but also with the benefits of carbon fibre. Keira McVitty and Juliet Elliott had shown impressive stamina in Brooklyn for round one and both were hoping for dryer conditions in Italy. The 1,270 metre road circuit was always going to be a challenge and along with the heavy rain, the team would be pushed to the limit. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv title=\"Page 1\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe team was fielding two of the biggest names in cycling, Kiera McVitty has been a rising star and a fresh young face in British cycling since she first rode for WindyMilla in 2015. She has now become an established rider in the Red Hook Criteriums. Her cycling partner and close friend Juliet Elliot is a multi-discipline cyclist who competes in road, track and mountain bike races. Heat 1 started off well for McVitty but being under-geared, she fell short while the riders in front continued ahead. Elliot rode the second heat confidently and used these conditions to her advantage. Unfortunately, an unavoidable spill caused her to crash and lose 20 seconds. Both riders got off to a quick start, clipping in fast and each overtaking riders in front. The circuit had dried and this allowed for a more confident approach to the corners, making it easier for them to keep their starting pace. Elliot, in a group of 30 riders, sped through the circuit at a pace of over 40kmph. One of the limiting factors when it comes to bigger bikes is the steerer tube length, as most fork manufacturers only provide up to 300mm of steerer tube to work with. However, ENVE offer their 2.0 disc fork with a 350mm steerer length, which is perfect for long head tubes on larger frames. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eDue to the length of tubing required to build a large frame, maintaining the level of stiffness required to support a heavier rider can be a challenge. Thanks to SKODA I was able to attend Ride London to support four women I’d been mentoring along with Hannah Barnes, helping them go from never having ridden a road bike to riding 100 miles in one day (over the course of five weeks!).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/bikes-n-stuff.com\/tour-de-france-as-a-vip\/\"\u003eflew out to the Tour de France\u003c\/a\u003e, went to the Ovo Energy Women’s to chat to women mechanics, Directeur Sportifs, soigneur and pro cyclists and went to the final stage of the Tour of Britain where my family and I were able to ride the course before settling into the VIP hospitality area to cheer on our favourite racers. And if that wasn’t sweet enough, they also saw fit to lend me a brand new Kodiaq SUV!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBack in Devon, I entered my first road races snagging a 4\u003c\/span\u003e\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e place at one of the Cotswolds League races (a vast improvement from my first road race at Hatherleigh at the start of the season where I came second to last!) and I continued a pattern of frequently coming \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003esecond\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e at various crits. Happily, I did take the top step on the podium at the Regional Champs so \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eI’m now South West Regional Crit Champion\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. I’m looking forward to more road races next year in Mid Devon colours and will definitely be doing more road races. Raced on track bikes with no brakes these closed-circuit races are fast, furious, incredible fun and require high levels of fitness and skill. Just to give you an idea of how hard the races can be, the last few fixed gear crits have seen National Champions (such as US National Crit Champion Justin Williams), current Pro Tour riders such as Ivan Cortina and Olympic champions such including Dani King on the start line.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0848\/4922\/files\/P1020819.jpg?v=1538995073\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis summer \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eI joined a new women’s fixed crit team WyndyMilla Hype Energy Drinks,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003etook delivery of this crazy bike and we set about hitting up as many races as possible. Most recently we raced Brussels City Crit in torrential rain (which I think gave me an advantage!) and got good results – I took home 2\u003c\/span\u003e\u003csup\u003end\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e place and my team mate Keira bagged 4\u003c\/span\u003e\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. I’m currently on my home from the last fixed crit of the year, the legendary Red Hook Crit Milan where, let’s just say, things didn’t exactly go to plan. I only started making \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eweekly\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e YouTube vlogs about my cycling adventures at the end of last year, having previously been quite sporadic with my content and clearly the regularly schedule has helped increase my followers as I’m now edging close to 25,000 subscribers on my channel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe week-long creator camp was a chance to learn new skills, experiment, be inspired and meet other video makers but I think the best thing for me was a feeling that YouTube believe in me. We heard from amazing speakers such as Jess Phillips MP who talked about the importance of female voices and using our platform to connect and inspire, after sharing worrying statistics about the number of storylines in films, column inches in newspapers and overall appearances women make in traditional media. She urged us to continue using new ways of connecting with people and telling our stories, something I fully intend to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn between all the events and races I attended over the summer, I did actually manage to spend some time in Devon enjoying the fantastic area where we live.
